I have an Announcement always sounds so ominous, doesn't it? However, there is no need to be apprehensive in this case. In fact, the Announcement I have to make is very exciting! I'm really happy to be sharing this with you guys and I hope that you all feel the same way :D

But first, some background information.

A few days ago, I was on the Internet, doing normal stuff. You know, tweeting, blogging, reviewing, that sort of thing. A day in the life of me.

Then I see this Announcement: GeekDad Exclusive: New Covers Revealed for Across the Universe Trilogy.

So I think to myself, Well, that looks interesting, and I go and click on it the way I'm sure you just did, if you haven't seen it already.

Famous last words.

Because the moment my eyes landed on the new covers, I was ready to rip my hair out with rage.

The new covers are among the ugliest I've ever seen. Not that everyone will agree with me, but there you go.

WHY Penguin WHY??!

That's pretty much what ran through my head after seeing this horrible cover change.

I mean, I bought Across the Universe after being drawn to its gorgeous cover.

These covers right here are as gorgeous as any I've ever seen! And oh, the new ones…they just make my heart hurt, and not in a good way.

So, because I am who I am, I took to Twitter to express my anger. A wonderful conversation involving me getting to vent my anger and frustration ensued, including the lovely Linda from Mission to Read, Hannah from The Girl in a Café, and one of my best blogging friends, Eileen, from ***Singing and Reading in the Rain***.

So as this heated discussion about the Across the Universe cover changes was happening, many other instances of cover changes came up.

I freely admit that I can be a shallow person and totally judge books based on their covers. That's so much of the reason why I bought Nightshade when it first came out. I mean, look at it!

The second cover was never even released, because they changed the cover theme soon afterwards. And I love these covers! They practically sparkle! They are light and beautiful.

Then they changed the cover theme to this:

Now the covers are so dark that you can hardly tell what the heck is even going on. Also, in the second cover, Calla totally looks like a stripper. If I hadn't already read Nightshade with the first cover, I would probably never have picked up this series.

Here's another one. Take the original Shatter Me cover, for instance.

So many people own this lovely hardcover, and then they realize that if they want a matching set…

They will have to buy it again. Because even though the new covers aren't necessarily ugly in this case, they are most assuredly different.

Allow me to give you one more example.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver. There is nothing wrong with this cover. It speaks volumes, and it's gorgeous.  It really represents the story told and has a story itself. It says something.

Then they go and do THIS to the covers.

Also this.

I'll be among the first to admit that I think these are pretty. But nothing special.

Ah, yes, and now to the Announcement, which you guys have been waiting so patiently for. This is why I love you.

So the wonderful Eileen and I got to thinking. What if we decided to hold a Cover Madness Chat in Twitter for everyone to discuss their opinions on cover changes and such?

We both thought it sounded brilliant.

So, it will be on July 20th from 4:00 to 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

We'll be using the hashtag #CoverMadnessChat, and we'll be inviting authors and publicists to join in on the fun!

So, authors and publicists, as well as publishers, Eileen and I would love if you could stop by and discuss your opinions and thoughts on cover changes! I can promise that it will be a blast! You can send an email to me if you're interested. I will happily provide any additional information that you'd like!

If you're a blogger or just one of my awesome fellow book lovers, I'd love it if you could join in on the fun! Spreading the word by tweeting, Facebooking, sharing this post, etc. would be simply amazing and greatly appreciated, too! I seriously can't wait to hear your opinions!

And now, to RSVP. Because I am your OCD AMV and I would not be the AMV that you all know and hopefully love if I wasn't freakishly organized, I am using a cute little Google doc for you to RSVP with. :)

Eep! I have an embarrassing tendency to squeak when I get excited, and I am most definitely excited. I'm practically bouncing on the balls of my feet! There nothing like good old-fashioned excitement.

Thank you all so much for putting up with me, even when my posts are so long it veers on ridiculous! This is why I love you guys and wish I could hug all of you all the time.

Bye for now, my dear, darling roses! I hope to see you all at the Cover Madness Chat!

Lovelovelove (forever and ever!),

  1. I love books and I have a weakness for gorgeous covers. But a pretty cover doesn't necessarily mean I'll give it 5 stars. Cover rating and book ratings are completely separate. :P

It makes me soo mad when they suddenly change the cover for the last book! If they wanna revamp it fine, but at release the last one in the old matching design first! At least give the loyal readers who have been following since the beginning a chance to properly complete their collection. >:(

  2. I was so mad about the new covers for Across the Universe. And the reason given makes no sense at all. Of course the cover would attract mainly YA readers. It's a YA series! The new covers look so old fashioned and they don't really tell you much about the book. Now I don't think it will attract YA readers at all.

I think many people would agree that Calla looks like a stripper in the new Wolfsbane cover. The old covers were so much prettier.

Cover Madness Chat sounds like fun! And also I thought AMV was Anime Music Video. I was very confused till I remembered those were your initials. :P

  3. The Across the Universe cover change actually broke my soul... The new ones are horrible. Its ironic because the only reason I actually picked it up off the shelf was because of the gorgeous cover (I actually bought it because the story sounded amazing). Why couldn't those designs be for the paperback version!!! Why did they have to mess with my beautiful collection!! WHY FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN!!!!

And the same thing happen with Nightshade... The author (and prob the publisher too) say that the new covers better represent the theme of the book to which I ask: What does a stripper under the moon have to do with ANYTHING!? They're not even that kind of wolf!! UGHH...

  4. What a great post! I am addicted to beautiful covers. And agree with much of what you wrote. I thought that the original covers of Across the Universe/A Million Suns were pretty. And I agree that the new ones are much worse.

I also agree about the Nightshade series/Andrea Cremer. I loved that arc cover of Wolfsbane so much. I was heartbroken that i could not get it. It was one of my favorite book covers of that year. And i hated the new cover of Wolfsbane so much that i couldn't even own it. I took it out from the library. Because i did not want to look at it. I actually did not mind the new cover of Nightshade (although i probably like the first cover better). But Wolfsbane and Bloodrose were not nice. Did not want to own them or look at them.

Shatter Me is crazy too. I thought the original cover was so beautiful. I was obsessed with it. But i will say that after reading the book, the cover had nothing to do with the book. So that part made me sort of mad. The cover needs to be beautiful. But it has to represent the book too. I don't know how i feel about the new covers. I hate that they made the change. I hate that they don't go with the original cover. I don't dislike them. But don't love them.

As for Delirium, well at least the new covers are nicer. So in this case i don't mind as much. But the original was more inventive.

  5. They look like old sci-fi/fantasy books that my Dad has from the 70s/80s. Yuck.

  6. What the....

Thank you thank you that we still have old cover of "Across the universe" in Poland. I'll lay my hands on it soon.

  7. WHY DO PUBLISHERS DO THIS TO US!?!?! None of the original covers were ugly, in fact a lot of them are better than the new ones. I bet its a scheme to get us to buy the same books again so all of our covers match. How DEVIOUS! LOL... JK... They need to quite the cover changing. Grrrr...

  8. Could not agree more!! :( I like for my series to have the same covers, but I can't afford to buy new ones all the time -.-"
If I had the oppurtunity I'd have participated on twitter, but I'll be asleep by then :)
